The Einstein House: where quantum leaps were taken

Truly revolutionary events took place behind the sandstone frontage on Kramgasse 49, in a small 2nd floor apartment: this is where Albert Einstein (1879–1955), at the time an official in the Patent Office, developed his five key scientific works around 1905, including the special theory of relativity and the theory of light quanta. These were monumental breakthroughs in modern physics!

Einstein lived with his wife Milena Maric and their son Eduard for two years in this modest apartment which has been owned by the Albert Einstein Society since 1977. It has been restored to its original condition to enable visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the scholarly couple; contemporary furniture and objects have been installed here. The exhibition outlines Einstein’s pioneering discoveries while a 20 minute video explains his life, thought and action.
